This year 2023, Axiom Personnel celebrates 10 years of solving recruitment challenges for our clients in the Textile Services Industry.

We are currently recruiting for one of our commercial Essex-based Laundering and Linen Hire clients and we are proud to have been providing them with recruitment solutions since 2013.

Like many other industry sectors, the Textiles Services industry has been struggling to recruit quality staff for their businesses across the UK. The industry association, the TSA has been working alongside European partners to explore initiatives to support the challenges the industry faces, it’s not just the UK, other European countries are also experiencing recruitment issues in the sector.

After a two-day conference in Switzerland in April this year, the delegates agreed to run an International Laundry Day in 2024 (this is an event that is run annually in the States) its aim will be to raise the profile of the Laundry Industry as a destination of choice for young people leaving school and to provide work for those in the Give People a Second Chance category. Some of the largest laundry companies in the UK recently visited HMP Wynot in Lancashire to explore the work being done to help offenders reintegrate back into work.

The TSA is also working hard with the Government to raise the industry’s profile, which has resulted in many MPs visiting their local commercial laundry and linen companies. The TSA represents both suppliers and commercial laundry companies and has a long history dating back to the mechanisation of the laundry business which is as far back as 1886.

In a report produced by Hatch Regeneris in 2020, the industry was estimated to contribute to the exchequer £190m and employs 28,000 FTE jobs. On a weekly basis, there are over 53 million textile items such as uniforms, work wear, bed linen and towels supporting the hotel and leisure industry, larger hotels would have to close after 3 days if the linen cleaning services became unavailable.

The Textile Service sector also provides a vital service to Hospitals and Care Homes, with improvements in care and a reduction in time spent in the hospital, eg a new mum will be often home the same day, meaning the beds will have to be changed every day, rather than spending a week in the hospital recovering.

In 2020, the same report identified 60% of companies had unfilled vacancies.
