Checking our candidates’ credentials is essential to keep our clients and candidates safe
UK Material Handling Association celebrated National Forklift
Safety Day in June and the theme this year was Operators Training.
Last year the industry reported 25 deaths ‘struck by a
moving vehicle’ which was the second most common cause of death in the
workplace in 2020/21. Most of these accidents involving forklift drivers,
co-workers and the general public could have been avoided if the drivers had
been fully trained and were competent.
There are on average 5 accidents a day in this country and although
there is no such thing as a Fork Lift Driving Licence there is an expectation that
each driver will have been through relevant training and have current
qualifications to use a forklift.
The UKMHA created an e’booklet supporting the campaign with
clear guidelines for agency workers and contractors highlighting the employers’
responsibilities. The content and the training can vary depending on the
candidates experience and evidence of their current training. Employers also
need to provide orientation and specific job training. (link to booklet below)
Qualified candidates can get frustrated with clients when
they are waiting to be put through the full Health and Safety training checks,
but with accidents on the increase, we all need to ensure we are protecting the
wellbeing of everyone involved in the process.
At Axiom we are proud to work with reputable clients in the logistics
and warehousing industry and we have extensive discussions with candidates to
ensure they meet training requirements for each location.
If you are currently recruiting for competent warehousing
staff and need partner to help you resource and fulfil these roles, please get
in touch.
